Video: He Did Something His Executioners Couldn't Predict

In 16th-century Japan, Christianity spread rapidly across the land—until it was suddenly outlawed.

Among those condemned was Paul Miki, a Jesuit priest and gifted preacher. Along with twenty-five others, he was forced to march nearly six hundred miles to his execution in Nagasaki.

What followed was not what anyone expected.

As the crosses were raised, Paul Miki did not remain silent. From the place of his death, he began to speak—proclaiming the Gospel and forgiving those who had condemned him.

The execution meant to silence him became his final sermon.
